The role of Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning) was created in 2007, with responsibility for five major areas of operation: Athletics and Recreation, Enrolment Services, Student Housing and Hospitality Services, Services for Students, and Teaching and Learning Services. The Dean of Students also reports to the Deputy Provost. In all, Student Life and Learning has approximately 650 full time employees, working in support of McGill’s more than 40,000 students.
With the approaching conclusion of the term of appointment of the second Deputy Provost, the University will undertake a review of the organizational structure of the Student Life and Learning portfolio with particular respect to internal coherence, the relationship of SLL priorities and responsibilities to other units within the University, and responsiveness to student needs and concerns.
In pursuing this assessment, the Committee to review the Scope and Orientation of the Student Life and Learning Portfolio will consider the following:
- The core mission of Student Life and Learning and the expression thereof across the SLL subunits
- The operational priorities of SLL and its subunits
- The broad organizational structure of SLL and its subunits
- The mission and organization of SLL comparators at peer institutions
- The scope and mandate of the position of Deputy Provost, Student Life and Learning
- The relationship between the roles of Deputy Provost, Student Life and Learning, and Dean of Students
In the course this review the Committee will interview staff within SLL and consult with representatives of student organizations. The Committee will likewise hold open consultation sessions for members of the McGill community (students, staff, faculty) students who wish to participate.
The Committee will complete its assessment by 30 June 2018, with conclusions to the presented to the Principal and Vice-Chancellor and other members of the University leadership. A summary of findings and recommendations will also be made available to the University community. This timeline will allow for a reorganization of SLL priorities, operational structures, and leadership roles, should such changes be deemed necessary, in anticipation of a search for a new head of Student Life in Learning during the 2018-19 academic year.
