January 7, 2022
Dear members of the McGill community:
First, l would like to wish all of you a New Year filled with joy, serenity and good health. While the year 2022 did not start in the way we had all anticipated, it marks, nonetheless, an important milestone in the life of our University, with the beginning of McGill’s third century.
Entering a new century affords us a unique opportunity for renewal and for setting new directions and ambitious goals. It is, I believe, an ideal time to pass the baton to our next leader, who will shape the future of our University together with the entire McGill community. With that in mind, I have made the decision to step down from my role as Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the end of August 2022.
Until then, I will remain focused on building on the strong foundation of McGill University, embedded in its Mission and Principles. And I will continue to help steer our University safely to harbour, through what I hope will be the tail end of the COVID storm, so that my successor can sail in calmer waters towards a bright future for McGill.
It has been and will continue to be an extraordinary privilege to serve my alma mater and its great community, and I will remain forever a loyal supporter of McGill.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
