Message to the McGill Community regarding COVID-19 - March 25, 2020

March 25, 2020

Dear members of the McGill community,

We have been sending you daily messages with updates as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold worldwide at a very rapid pace. We understand that this influx of information may have caused confusion for some. However, given the unprecedented nature of this crisis, it is important that we share all the information we have so that we can all adapt rapidly to an evolving situation.

You have shared with us your concerns and many issues that need to be addressed. Right now, we are focusing on the most pressing ones, but will attend to other issues as soon as we can. Our top priority at the moment is the health, well-being, and safety of our community. We are also concentrating on resuming our teaching activities through remote means to allow students to complete their semester and academic year. As we move forward, it continues to be important to know what's on your mind; I can be reached at mcgill.principal [at]

While each one of us is personally affected by this crisis, there are still many reasons to be grateful. We have dedicated teams at McGill who have been working around the clock to help us get through this situation. Our alumni, friends and colleagues from around the world have reached out to us to offer their help and support. Finally, our governments are working tirelessly to keep our province and our country safe and to equip us to return to normal life as soon as possible.

I recognize that this is a particularly trying period, but I am certain that we will emerge from it with increased resilience, humility, and most importantly, humanity.

Please let us all remember to be patient and kind to one another.

Suzanne Fortier

Principal and Vice-Chancellor
