McGill’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism

September 30, 2020

Dear members of the McGill community,

I write to share McGill’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism. Professor Christopher Manfredi, Provost & Vice-Principal (Academic), developed this Action Plan pursuant to wide consultation with the McGill community following a mandate that I gave him on June 30, 2020.

This Action Plan is impressive in its reach and ambition, and I endorse each of its action items. With this Action Plan, we renew our commitment to equity and inclusion in the pursuit of academic excellence as we prepare to mark McGill’s Bicentenary and enter our third century.

I thank the Provost for his leadership in completing this important mandate, which was carried out in just three months. This turnaround time, while compressed, reflects the need to act with urgency to address anti-Black racism.

Many members of the McGill community shared insights, experiences, and views that shaped this Action Plan. In particular, I wish to acknowledge and sincerely thank the Dr. Kenneth Melville Black Faculty Caucus, the McGill Black Alumni Association, the Black Students’ Network, and the Subcommittee for Racialized and Ethnic Persons.

Work on implementing the Action Plan will begin immediately and will require an ongoing commitment from all of us in the years to come. This work will be broad in scope and we will continue to reach out and consult with the community as we progress in the implementation of the Action Plan. I am confident that we are up to this challenge and all recognize the benefits of this undertaking for the good of the entire McGill community.
