Flooding in Quebec and Ontario

May 10, 2017

Dear members of the McGill community:

As I am sure most of you are aware, there has been extreme flooding in areas across southwestern Quebec and southeastern Ontario. Many homes have already been evacuated. The devastation, both physical and emotional, in these areas is massive. My thoughts are with those of you who live in, or have friends and family living in, the affected areas.

Although parts of Montreal’s West Island have been flooded, we are fortunate that our Macdonald Campus remains safe and open.

I would like to commend the McGill staff and students who have volunteered their time to help police, firefighters and the Armed Forces in their efforts to secure at-risk homes in and around Montreal. I would also like to remind you that the Canadian Red Cross has launched a campaign to raise funds that will provide food, clothing and shelter to the more than 1,400 people who have been forced to flee their homes. Donations can be made online.

Although it is hoped that the floodwaters will soon begin to recede, there will likely be a long period of recovery for many communities. I would like to thank instructors and supervisors for their continued flexibility in accommodating those students and employees who continue to deal with flooding issues.
