Annual Meeting 2020, Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

In her capacity as GULF Chair, Principal Fortier attended the 2020 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting from January 21–24, which marked the WEF’s 50th anniversary. Some 3,000 participants convened under the theme, Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World. While in Davos, Prof. Fortier joined high-level public panels, including “Defining Education 4.0,” “Leading a Mentally Healthy Organization” and a livestreamed session from the media village.


Annual Meeting 2019, Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

Principal Fortier and Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou, Dean of the Desautels Faculty of Management, attended the 2019 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, 22-25 January. The Meeting brought together over 3,000 participants from government, international organizations, business, civil society, media, culture, as well as the foremost experts and young people from all over the world. Under the theme "Globalization 4.0: Creating a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution", participants discussed a wide range of topics, including globalization, populism, Artificial Intelligence and mental health.

McGill participated again as the only Canadian member of the Global University Leaders Forum, with Principal Fortier serving as vice-chair (now chair) of the GULF.

Among other topics, Principal Fortier looked at the technologies that are reshaping the human landscape and leading to profound changes of our social fabric. Professor Bajeux-Besnainou served as co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Consumption and explored how game-changing technologies can enhance retail models.


Annual Meeting 2018, Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

Principal Fortier attended the 2018 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, 23-26 January. The Meeting brought together a record number of leaders from G7 economies, government and international organizations alongside leaders from business, civil society, academia, the arts and media, who convened under the theme “Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World.”

McGill participated again as the only Canadian member of the Global University Leaders Forum.

While in Davos, Prof. Fortier joined a high-level public panel tackling the question what can be done to stop rising rates of depression among young people and safeguard their mental health. 


Annual Meeting 2017, Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum took place January 17 – 20, in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. Over 2,500 leaders from business, government, international organizations, civil society, academia, media and the arts convened under the theme “Responsive and Responsible Leadership.”

McGill, led by Principal Fortier, participated as the only Canadian university member of the Global University Leaders Forum. She introduced a McGill IdeasLab led by professors Elena Bennett (Department of Natural Resource Sciences and School of Environment), Andrew Gonzalez (Department of Biology) and Graham MacDonald (Department of Geography) on the theme “Shaping a Sustainable World.” Video recordings of the three IdeasLab presentations: Profs Andy GonzalezElena Bennett, and Graham Macdonald.  

Amongst other engagement opportunities, Prof. Fortier also participated in two panels “Pathways to a 1.5 Degree World” and “Jobs and the Fourth Industrial Revolution”.


Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2016, Tianjin, China

Under the theme, “The Fourth Industrial Revolution and Its Transformational Impact,” 1,500 business leaders, policy-makers and experts from over 90 countries convened in Tianjin, China, in June 26-28, 2016, to shape a future of exponentially disruptive change.

McGill hosted an IdeasLab during the Meeting in Tianjin, led by two researchers from the Faculty of Science and one researcher from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and introduced by Dean Lennox. It was entitled “Mastering Complex Systems – Sustainable Landscapes” and focused on new capabilities for analyzing complex geophysical data. The IdeasLab is part of the McGill Sustainability Sciences Initiative (MSSI) which is tackling selected grand challenges of sustainable development by undertaking a highly integrated trans-sector approach.

Annual Meeting 2016, Davos-Klosters, Switzerland

The Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum took place on January 20-23, 2016, with more than 2,500 business and government leaders as well as international organizations, academia, civil society, the arts and media in attendance. 

The theme was "Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution" and discussions addressed questions including: How is technology changing our lives and that of future generations?  How is it reshaping the economic, social, ecological and cultural contexts in which we live?

Principal Fortier participated in Davos as a guest of the Global University Leaders Forum, and McGill was the only Canadian university represented at the meeting. She participated in three panels: Women and Science, A New Chapter for Canada, and Global Science Outlook, as well as events with members of the Canadian government and CEOs of private and public organizations.


Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2015, Dalian, China

Principal Fortier participated in two panels on innovation and collaboration at the World Economic Forum’s ninth annual Meeting of the New Champions, held in Dalian, China, September 9-11, 2015. Under the theme “Charting a New Course for Growth,” the event brought together more than 1,500 participants from business, government, research and media from over 90 countries.
