Dear students and colleagues:
Canadians are mourning the 176 lives lost on Ukraine International AirlinesFlight 752. The tragedy has been felt deeply across Canada’s universities; many of the victims were students, professors or graduates.
Two members of our own community died in the crash, a current student and a recent graduate. Although there were initial reports of a second McGill alumnus aboard the plane, we have since learned that this was a case of mistaken identity.
As we mark the one-week anniversary of the crash, two memorials will be held on McGill’s campuses. Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, at 1 p.m. EST, universities across Canada will observe a minute of silence to honour all those who lost their lives. The following day, Thursday, January 16, at 10 a.m., the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will hold a memorial service in Room MS2-022 in the Macdonald-Stewart Building on the Macdonald Campus.
I invite you to participate in these remembrances, as Canada’s universities stand in solidarity with the Iranian-Canadian community and everyone grieving such unspeakable loss.
