Subspecialty and Enhanced Skills Applications

Medicine and Pediatric Subspecialty programs offered by the PGME office are accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). RCPSC certification in a subspecialty can only be granted if one first completes all credentials, training, and examination requirements in a primary specialty that is the entry route to the subspecialty, i.e Internal Medicine. Information regarding the subspecialty training requirements for each program can be found on the Royal College website.

To be eligible in Quebec, candidates must hold an MD degree at a Faculty of Medicine in Canada or the United States or hold a degree from outside Canada or the United States (DHCEU) and have had obtained equivalence for their Medical Degree from the Collège des médecins du Québec. They must be registered in an Internal Medicine residency in a Canadian or American Faculty of Medicine.

IMGs already licensed and practicing as subspecialists in Canada but who do not have access to Royal College certification via a primary specialty; and/or, IMGs who are registered with a postgraduate office in an accredited Royal College subspecialty training program, and who are not eligible to meet the prerequisite for subspecialty certification (Royal College certification in a primary specialty), can contact the RCPSC for information about eligibility to sit the SEAP Exams. In order to be eligible through SEAP, candidates need to have their training assessed by the Royal College. Residents who are eligible through SEAP are not certified in the subspecialty, but they receive an attestation in the subspecialty. For information about practicing in Québec, please contact the CMQ.
