Accommodations FAQ

Am I entitled to accommodations in a remote learning environment?

Yes! The same legal requirement to provide disability-related accommodations exists in a remote environment.

McGill OSD is committed to ensuring that all students registered with the OSD continue to remain supported during this time. Rest assured that accommodations will be available and in place in a remote learning and assessment environment. The OSD is working closely with other units on campus to ensure that accessibility is planned for in remote learning environments.

Note that time-based accommodations for exams DO NOT APPLY if your class has been given 48 hours or more to complete the assessment.

I am not registered with the OSD but am currently experiencing academic barriers in the remote learning environment.

Please visit our bookings page to schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor as soon as possible.

I have stopwatch time as an accommodation. Do I have access to this accommodation in a remote learning environment?

Yes. Please sign up for your accommodation(s) using the exam sign-up form and indicate stopwatch time as your accommodation. Students that have the stopwatch time accommodation for quizzes, tests and exams will be entitled to additional time, which is calculated on the basis of the exam’s original length.

Students are entitled to 30 minutes of additional time for all assessments that are more than 1 hour in duration, 10 minutes of additional time for assessments of a duration of 31 to 60 minutes, and 5 minutes of additional time for assessments of a duration of 30 minutes or less.

Please be reminded that the intention of the stopwatch accommodation is to provide students with the possibility to take short breaks during their exam, that do not count towards the assessment duration. These breaks are intended to provide students with time to address barriers they may experience during the exam (e.g. specific medical needs, or self-regulation strategies).

*Note that time-based accommodations for exams DO NOT APPLY if your class has been given 48 hours or more to complete the assessment.
