ObGyn Clerkship Schedule Issues

Orientation

Orientation to the ObGyn rotation occurs from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on the first Tuesday of the rotation. This orientation session is for all students and attendance is mandatory. It is held at the RVH Primrose Amphitheater, Room F3.10. This is followed by a teaching session on practical simulation of a vaginal delivery.

Hospital site

Students will either spend 8 weeks at the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Jewish General Hospital, or at St. Mary’s Hospital, or spend a combination of 4 weeks at LaSalle Hospital and 4 weeks at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Each of these hospitals offers a somewhat different atmosphere and clinical experience, but by the end of the rotation all students will have attained the necessary degree of knowledge and skill to attain their objectives.

Teaching

The teaching program includes didactic core teaching sessions, weekly seminar presentations and departmental rounds. Students also participate in weekly perinatalogy rounds, Tumor Board rounds, and multidisciplinary rounds.

Within the weekly schedule clerks should give priority to the core teaching sessions. Teaching schedules are sent to students by email. Students must complete evaluations of each session on one45.  Attendance is taken for each session.

On-call schedule and duty hours

The on-call systems vary from one hospital to another. Weekend call will be assigned on a rotational basis. A good deal of learning in ObGyn typically occurs while on-call. No night call is required the night before the exam, as well as the night before the full day teaching session and before the recall days.

Although the call schedules and duties hours vary from site to site, they abide by the student duty hours policies of McGill University (Supplement to Student Handbook).
