Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program

Mission of the program

The goal of the program is to prepare the primary health care nurse practitioner for this multifaceted role in community settings. The primary health care nurse practitioner is prepared to provide and/or collaborate in the provision of services designed to deal with the health care needs and problems of all ages patients and their families in a variety of settings such as Family Medicine Units (GMF), GMF-U, CLSC, long term care facilities, patient homes and emergency departments. The focus in all specialties is the development of expert clinical competence. The ability to function as a teacher, consultant, liaison, and manager is essential to the development of clinical expertise. These areas are addressed within the curriculum. In Québec, the primary health care nurse practitioner corresponds with the title Infirmière praticienne spécialisée en soins de première ligne

Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Internship

By the end of the program, the student will have completed 950 hours of clinical practicum.  The supervision of the student is provided in collaboration with the family physician and the primary health care nurse practitioner on site. There are currently a great variety of clinical sites (CLSC, GMF, GMF-U) with many different populations (refugees, immigrants, urban populations, rural populations, etc).

To add on the clinical practicum, there are 50 hours of simulation offered to the students to practice particular clinical skills and prepare for the NP licensure exam in a safe learning environment.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program can practice in a variety of settings from an office in a CLSC, Family Medicine Units (GMF), GMF-U, to a patient’s home or even emergency departments. More specifically, in Quebec, the ministerial plan to integrate 2,000 nurse practitioners by the year 2025 includes the creation of a number of positions for primary health care nurse practitioners.
