During his eight years as federal Finance Minister, and throughout his long political career, Jim Flaherty distinguished himself through his unwavering commitment to serving Canadians. His guidance and leadership showed a dedication to innovation, and to building Canadian prosperity in a rapidly changing global landscape.

“Mr. Flaherty believed in the value of research excellence,” says Suzanne Fortier, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University. “We saw this in his support of initiatives that strengthened, and grew, Canada’s talent pool. He believed in the importance of providing top-tier talent with the resources they need to dream, and to turn those dreams into the innovations that improve the lives of Canadians.”

Jim Flaherty was a great Canadian, and a great friend to his country’s research community and universities. We send our deepest condolences to his family during this sad time.
