Scientific audit terminated

Published: 20 March 1997

McGill University has agreed to the termination of the scientific audit into the work of the late Dr. Justine Sergent. Given the resignation last fall of Dr. Pierre Bois, one of the members of the two-person committee carrying out the audit, the Sergent Estate objected to the continuation of the audit by the remaining committee member Dr. Marcus Raichle. In today’s letter to Maître Claude-Armand Sheppard, who represents the Estate, Principal Shapiro stated, "We were and still are fully confident of the continued integrity of the process and in the competence of Dr. Raichle, a world-renowned expert, to complete the task." However, he went on to say, "since the liquidator of Dr. Sergent’s Estate is not willing to approve of the continuance of the audit in its current format," he has instructed Dr. Raichle to terminate the audit immediately.

The Principal also advised Maître Sheppard that the University does not intend to replace Dr. Raichle nor to embark on another audit.

The University has no further comment to make on the matter.
