The Mirror - Swimming with plutonium

Published: 10 March 2011

Ontario’s Bruce Power nuclear plant is shipping hundreds of tonnes of radioactive waste up the St. Lawrence. Critics worry this is only the first batch… Such is life in the nuclear era.

“Nothing is 100 per cent safe, and it’s foolish to assume anything would be,” says McGill civil engineering Professor Patrick Selvadurai. A consultant with the CNSC on geological disposal of nuclear waste, he believes the industry has to be as rigorous, careful and forthright as possible when dealing with transporting waste.

“But society is used to the idea of having this as a power source, so we can’t be hypocritical saying we don’t want to deal with the waste.”
