Biography

Igal Ifergan is a neuro-immunologist interested in investigating immune regulation by innate cells for the treatment and resolution/repair of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. He has worked on diverse CNS diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS), spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, glioblastoma, and viral infection of the eye. A question central to inflammatory diseases is how antigen-presenting cells switch from induction of inflammation to the development of tolerance. Dr. Ifergan’s objective is to find approaches that allow for re-education of the immune system. He believe’ s these approaches can be applied to several autoimmune, infectious and neoplastic diseases of the CNS. Dr. Ifergan demonstrated the effectiveness of dampening the innate immune response in the CNS through various mechanisms such as usage of biodegradable nanoparticles, blockade of the GM-CSF receptor, activation of the Wnt-β-catenin pathway, and blockade of the miR-223. During his PhD, Igal Ifergan studied the process of transmigration of immune cells across the blood-brain barrier and aim to continue exploring the consequences of CNS inflammation on glial cells. To that effect, in January 2018, Dr. Ifergan submitted a pilot grant to the NMSS focused on understanding the role of microglia in controlling inflammatory events of the CNS.

* Dr. Ifergan is a candidate for a tenure track faculty position in the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery with a focus on neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis.
