Graham A.C. Bell, James McGill Professor of Biology, was among one hundred-sixty four influential artists, scientists, scholars, authors, and institutional leaders who were inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at a ceremony in Cambridge on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Plucky comeback performance gives Chan Lee Golden Violin Prize

Byungchan (Chan) Lee is living proof that persistence pays off. Of course, being immensely talented doesn’t hurt either.

On Sunday night, Lee was announced as the winner of the 2014 Golden Violin Prize, awarded each year to a current student at the Schulich School of Music for their exceptional talent and contribution to musical and cultural life at the School. Lee was one of the runners up in last year’s competition.

John McCrae, poet and pathologist, inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame

John McCrae, McGill lecturer and author of the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields,” is to be posthumously inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF), as announced on Oct. 7. McCrae is one of six “medical heroes” to be inducted into the CMHF, a national charitable organization that fosters future generations of health professionals through the celebration of our country’s rich medical history, scholarship program and the delivery of both local and nationwide education programs for youth.

Four McGill researchers receive Arthritis Society grants

On Sept. 9, the Arthritis Society announced the commitment of $3.4 million in funding for arthritis research across Canada this year. The funding will be used to fund both established researchers as well as provide young investigators with their first opportunities to explore novel ideas within the field of arthritis research. A total of 18 new projects will be funded.

SSHRC grants fuel researchers to tune of $6.8 million

Three innovative research partnerships at McGill have received significant long-term investments from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) partnership grants program, totaling more than $6.8 million. McGill grad named Dean of Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture

Amale Andraos, who earned her B.Arch., from McGill in 1996, has been appointed Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University. The appointment is effective Sept. 1.

Cinq étudiantes de McGill ont remporté des prix dans le cadre du volet scientifique Excelle Science du dernier concours Chapeau, les filles! Elles étaient au nombre des 21 lauréates de cette catégorie qui ont reçu leur prix lors d’un gala qui s’est tenu le 9 juin dernier à l’Assemblée nationale, en présence du ministre Yves Bolduc.
