Martlets advance to CIS basketball title game for first time in history

Fifth-year point-guard Dianna Ros of Montreal, scored a team-high dozen points and All-Canadian Mariam Sylla knocked down the winning bucket as No.3 McGill rallied to edge second-seeded UBC 59-57 in a semifinal overtime thriller at the  CIS Final Eight women’s basketball, held at the PEPS Centre, Saturday.

Hebert’s hustle moves Martlets to CIS semifinals

Senior Gabriela Hebert and All-Canadian Mariam Sylla eached produced “double-doubles” as the No.3-seeded Martlets beat the No.6-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies in the opening game of the ArcelorMittal CIS Final 8 women’s basketball championships at the Centre PEPS, Thursday.

Daoust delivers deadly hat-trick as Dinos dominated in CIS quarters

Melodie Daoust scored three goals as the top-seeded McGill University women’s hockey team dominated the No.8-seeded Calgary Dinos in a CIS Final Eight national championship quarter-final at the Markin MacPhail Centre, Thursday.

Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., registered a hat-trick as top-ranked McGill cruised to a one-sided 7-2 victory over the No.2-ranked Université de Montréal Carabins to capture the Dr. Ed Enos Trophy as RSEQ women’s hockey champions before a crowd of 361 at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It was the 14th conference title since 1985 for the Martlets who avenged losing to the Carabins in the Quebec final during each of the last two years.

Game MVP Mariam Sylla registered a “double-double” and knocked down the winning basket in the dying seconds as McGill rallied for a thrilling 53-51 victory over the UQAM Citadins before a crowd of 514 at the Mitchell gym on Saturday afternoon, to capture the RSEQ women’s basketball championship for the fourth consecutive year, the second straight against UQAM.

Jona Bermillo and Majid Naji tallied 18 points apiece as the fourth-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters upset top-seeded McGill 68-63 to claim the RSEQ men’s basketball championship before a raucous, standing room only crowd of 1,073 at the Mitchell gymnasium, Saturday.

Synchro squad captures 12th national title

Stacy Lee of Vancouver, B.C., won three gold medals as McGill captured the Geraldine Dubrule trophy as national champions of the Canadian University Synchronized Swim League (CUSSL) at Carleton University on Sunday.

It marked McGill’s second consecutive CUSSL title and 12th overall since the league was formed in 2001-02.

Labrecque tallies twice as Redmen sweep Gaels in semis

If they scripted it for a Hollywood movie, nobody would believe it. But for the umpteenth time this season, defenceman Samuel Labrecque waited until the drama of high noon – and celebrated his birthday in style – by scoring twice in 17 seconds late in the game as McGill rallied for a 3-1 road victory over Queen’s at the Kingston Memorial Centre, Friday.
