Library acquires important collection on Voltaire

The McGill Library will celebrate the recent acquisition of the J. Patrick Lee Voltaire Collection by launching on Sunday, Oct. 27 an exhibit presenting a sampling of the collection. Belonging to the late, eminent Voltaire scholar J. Patrick Lee, the collection of books and manuscripts by and about Voltaire includes 1,994 items representing 3,189 volumes. In addition to the large number of older editions and more recent editions of Voltaire’s work, in different languages, the collection includes an ensemble of manuscripts and letters written or received by Voltaire. The collection, acquired thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, also includes over 1,000 books published in the 18th century.

McGill signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing on October 15 with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, as part of the celebrations around the 15th anniversary of the Quebec Government’s Office in Beijing and of a mission to China by Jean-François Lisée, Minister of International Relations, the Francophonie and External Trade.

Alert about recent phishing attack

McGill is looking into a recent phishing attack that targeted the McGill community. Phishing is an attempt to acquire an individual’s personal information by masquerading as a legitimate or trustworthy entity. In this most recent case, an email sent to McGill staff and students starting July 11 directed users to a website that looked very much like the Minerva website and asked them to supply their McGill username and McGill password and/or their McGill ID and PIN.

Growing up in suburban Montreal, 2013 McGill graduate Martin Legault always had a passion for the environment. At McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, he put that passion into practice, gaining the scientific and practical skills to help address the world’s pressing food and water issues. But when it comes to understanding the complex social, cultural and environmental factors behind food scarcity, there was only so much he could learn in the classroom.

Mother’s education impacts depression in her children

Children of women who did not finish high school were twice as likely to experience a major episode of depression in early adulthood as children whose mothers obtained a high school diploma, according to a new study by researchers at McGill University.
