Corus buys Shaw Media

"Toronto-based Corus Entertainment is buying Shaw Media from Shaw Communications in a $2.65-billion deal. The move shuffles ownership of 19 specialty TV channels including Global, Food Network Canada, HGTV Canada, HISTORY, Slice, National Geographic Channel and Showcase between two companies that are controlled by the Shaw family. Corus also owns a network of radio stations and the Nelvana animation studio." (Source: CBC)

Human sounds convey emotions better than words do

It takes just one-tenth of a second for our brains to begin to recognize emotions conveyed by vocalizations, according to researchers from McGill. It doesn’t matter whether the non-verbal sounds are growls of anger, the laughter of happiness or cries of sadness. More importantly, the researchers have also discovered that we pay more attention when an emotion (such as happiness, sadness or anger) is expressed through vocalizations than we do when the same emotion is expressed in speech.

Supreme Court on assisted suicide: 6-month extension?

In December 2015, the federal government has asked the Supreme Court for a six-month extension to draft new laws on doctor-assisted dying. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on this request starting January 11, 2016.
