The 2026 UCI Road World Championships will take place in Montreal from Sept. 20 to 27, with race routes and event activities affecting areas around Mount Royal and McGill. As mentioned in a Sept. 2 communication, travel to and from downtown campus may take longer than usual.
To help you plan ahead:
- Avoid travelling by car.
- The metro, REM and walking should be reliable ways to get to campus.
- If you travel by bus, check the STM website for detours and temporary stop closures.
- Adapted transit and those driving because of mobility needs should be able to reach campus, but subject to the same road closures as other vehicles.
-
If the event affects your ability to access campus or participate, students should contact their instructor or Faculty Student Affairs Office; employees should speak with a supervisor or department chair.
- Access control points are expected to be flexible, but carrying a McGill ID may help expedite access.
- For detailed information on road closures, consult official event webpages.
What to expect on campus
Because we have granted race organizers access to some of our facilities, McGill is an institutional partner of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships. As a result, you may notice an increased police and security presence on and around campus.
The McGill Sports Complex, located near the race finish area, will be particularly affected. As usual, those looking to access the gym will need to sign up to activities and to present a valid McGill ID.
Students living in a downtown residence will be especially close to race routes, so they should expect larger crowds, increased security, media activity and occasional pedestrian detours.
While the championships may cause some disruption, they also represent a unique opportunity for Montreal to host a major international sporting event.
Thank you for planning ahead and for your flexibility during the week.
All the best,
Tony Mittermaier
Dean of Students and Associate Provost (Student Life and Learning)
