Dr. Guy Rouleau

Director – Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital

Guy Rouleau began his appointment as Director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital on January 1, 2013. Since his arrival, he has been building a new framework for The Neuro by focusing on stronger collaboration and communication between researchers and bedside physicians.

Before joining the Neuro, Dr. Rouleau was Director of the CHU Ste-Justine Research Centre, and founder and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Neuroscience at Université de Montréal. There, he held both the Canada Research Chair in Genetics of the Nervous System and the Jeanne-et-J.-Louis-Levesque Chair in Genetics of Brain Diseases. He obtained his M.D. (Magna Cum Laude) in 1980 from the University of Ottawa, and earned a Ph.D. in Genetics from Harvard University in 1989. His post-graduate research in neuroscience was conducted at the Montreal Neurological Institute and at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Rouleau is credited with several landmark achievements, including the identification of over 20 disease-causing genes and the discovery of new mutational mechanisms. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Rouleau and his team have worked diligently to understand the genetic basis for diseases, and to identify genes that cause neurological and psychiatric diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, essential tremor, familial aneurysms, cavernous angiomas, epilepsy, spinocerebellar ataxia, spastic paraplegia, autism, Tourette syndrome, restless legs syndrome, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

His prolific work has earned him numerous awards, most recently the 2016 Prix de l’oeuvre scientifique from the Médecins francophones du Canada. Other accolades include the 2014 Prix d'Excellence du Collège des Médecins du Québec, the 2012 Prix du Québec – Prix Wilder Penfield, the 2012 Margolese National Brain Disorders Prize from the University of British Columbia, and the Henry Friesen Prize from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada / The Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation. He is an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2016).
