The Mental Health Research Speaker Series - Together Again: Navigating the Social World after the End of Lockdown

Thursday, August 19, 2021 13:00to14:00

Offered by the Health and Well-Being Program

The sanitary measures instituted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly changed our social lives. As restrictions ease and people gradually begin working and socializing in person again, many are excited to return to their pre-pandemic lives. While in-person relationships are an important source of psychological well-being, for a great number of us, this reopening comes with several challenges: Regrets about leaving the slower pace of working from home; anxiety about interacting with others in person; building or rebuilding a rewarding and supportive social network; meeting new people and dating; balancing social needs and alone-time. Drawing from relationship science and psychotherapy experience, this talk will explore various interpersonal challenges in the post-lockdown era, and offer tips and suggestions for navigating this unusual moment in a healthy way. Followed by a question and discussion period.

About the facilitator: Thomas Khullar is a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychology at McGill University. He studies friendship experiences in university students; specifically investigating features of high-quality friendships and their association to mental health outcomes. In his work as a psychotherapist, he explores links between clients' well-being and their ability to form and maintain healthy relationships. Both in his research and therapy practice, he is fascinated by the way people communicate verbally and non-verbally.
