Professor Jean-Sébastien Vallée appointed to Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival

Published: 1 October 2026

On September 8, Jean-Sébastien Vallée, Director of Choral Studies at the Schulich School of Music, was appointed to the prestigious post of Director of Choruses for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and the annual Tanglewood Festival.

The BSO is one of North America's top orchestral institutions, and it also oversees a renowned training academy and music festival at Tanglewood every summer.

We spoke with Prof. Vallée about what this new role means to him. He writes:

I am deeply honoured to join the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Director of
Choruses and to lead the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. This appointment
represents an extraordinary new chapter in my artistic life, and I’m especially
grateful tocontinue that journey alongside my work at the Schulich School of
Music.

Teaching and professional practice have always been deeply connected for me:
the experiences I gain on the podium inform what I bring back to my students
while their curiosity, ambition, and creativity continually shape me as an artist.
I hope this new role will create even more opportunities to build connections
between these worlds and to inspire the next generation of conductors and
choral artists.

The Schulich School of Music, its students and choirs are very fortunate that Prof. Vallée will continue as a valuable faculty member alongside his new position in Boston.

We congratulate Prof. Vallée and look forward to the many future projects he will lead in Montreal and beyond.

Your next chance to catch Prof. Vallée in concert at our School will be October 23, when he will conduct chamber orchestra I Musici de Montréal and the Schulich Singers for Mozart's Requiem in D minor, in Pollack Concert Hall.
