Biography:

Dave Laing (B.A. McGill; M.A. Con.) has been a faculty member at McGill since 1990. As a fixture on the Canadian jazz scene, he has performed on over 50 CDs, including projects with Remi Bolduc, the Joe Sullivan Big Band, Ranee Lee/Oliver Jones, Jon Ballantyne, Denzal Sinclaire, Kevin Dean and many others. He has given concerts and clinics across Canada, and in such diverse places as Brazil, France, USA, England, Israel, Mexico, and China. He has performed with such Canadian and international musicians as Jimmy Heath, Ben Monder, Barry Harris, Benny Golson, Ed Bickert, Don Thompson, Mark Murphy and Dave Liebman among others. His two-decades-plus of teaching at McGill include private instruction, combos, and lecture courses on Jazz History and Jazz Appreciation. His philosophy in learning music is to “sweat the details” and he cites his main musical influences as Charlie Parker, Elvin Jones, and Andre White.
