MISC Interim Director Elsbeth Heaman winner of 2018 Canada Prize

The McGill Institute for the Study of Canada is happy to announce that the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences has named Tax, Order, and Good Government: A New Political History of Canada, 1867-1917  as the winner for the English category of the 2018 Canada Prize, "awarded to books that make an exceptional contribution to scholarship, are engagingly written, and enrich the social, cultural and intellectual life of Canada."

Published this past June by McGill-Queen's University Press, Tax, Order, and Good Government: A New Political History of Canada, 1867-1917 is a culmination of extensive research on early Canadian tax debates undertaken by current MISC Director and Professor Elsbeth Heaman. Through rigorous analysis of private papers, commissions, the press, and all levels of government from coast-to-coast, the book provides insightful analysis on the history of Canadian taxation and its profound impact on the relationships between wealth and poverty, and state and society. 

The winner in the French category, announced in a press release, is postdoctoral fellow at the Department of French Language and Literature at McGill University, Alex Gagnon.  We congratulate all authors for their great achievement and thank them for their contribution to the study of Canada.
