Seminar on 'AFM nanolithography' 2014

A seminar was held on the topic ‘AFM nanolithography’ on the arrival of the new tool, nano frazer from SwissLitho from 17/Mar/2014 to 18/Mar/2014. On the first day, in the Rutherford Building, McGill University, topics such as Thermal NanoFrazor, Thermal Cantilevers and Resist materials was discussed. On the next day, topics such as Closed-Loop Lithography, Pattern transfer and Applications of Thermal Probe Nanolithography was presented.

MIAM Annual Meeting 2013

On 18/Apr/2013, a meeting was held from 2:00-6:00 pm at MacDonald Engineering Building room #267, McGill University, where the members of the McGill Institute for Advanced Materials participated and a panel discussion was held on the future of nanotechnology. A poster competition showcasing their research was held for the users of the nanotools microfab lab, characterization Facility and members of the MIAM lab.

Micro- and Nano- Fabrication for Biotechnology Course 2011

From 21/Feb/2011 – 25/Feb/2011, the MIAM Nanotools-Microfab Facility presented a flexible interdisciplinary lecture and lab course on Micro- and Nano- Fabrication for Biotechnology. Participants were provided with basic instruction on microfabrication and microfluidic techniques like protein patterning using microcontact printing, as well as one-on-one help for devices specific to their research.

MIAM Characterization and Nanotools Meeting 2011

On 7/Dec/2011, two presentations, one from the Characterization facility and another one from the Nanotools-Microfab facility were held at 2100 Trottier Building , from 1:00-2:00 pm. Prof. Pierre-Luc Girard Lauriault, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, McGill University provided a review of X-ray photon spectrometer in the MIAM Characterization facility. He also explained the details on how to use the data generated. Andra St-Quintin, Electrical and Computer Engineering, McGill University presented on Electron Beam Lithography in the MIAM Nanotools-Microfab facility.

Seminar on 'Optical Interference for multiplexed, label-free, and dynamic biosensing: protein, DNA and single virus detection' 2011

Dr. Selim Unlu, Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Physics at Boston University presented on the topic ‘Optical Interference for multiplexed, label-free, and dynamic biosensing: protein, DNA and single virus detection’ on 21/Oct/2011 from 10:30-11:30 am in the Lorne Trottier Building, Room # 0070, McGill University

MIAM Characterization and Microfabrication Facility Inaugration 2010

An exposition and inauguration session for the MIAM Characterization and Microfabrication Facility was held at Room 2110, Trottier Building, McGill University on 26/Nov/2010 from 2:00-4:00 pm. The use of the nanotools facility and new instruments including Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( NMR ) , X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy ( XPS ) , Electron Paramagnetic Resonance ( EPR ) , Micro-CT, and Laser Desorption ToF was illustrated. Presentations described the instruments’ many functions, and highlighted how they could help achieve research goals for advanced materials research.

MIAM Annual Meeting 2010

An annual meeting for the users of Nanotools was organized by Prof. Peter Grutter, Academic Fab Director, on 22/Feb/2010 with the aim of building and sustaining the Fab community, facilitate personal interactions, enable the exchange of information, and provide a forum for consultation between the fab team and users. Over 50 members participated from both academic and industrial sectors. The first meeting was a combination of posters by students, talks by Dave Danovitch (IBM Bromont), Mourad El‐Gamal (McGill University, Electrical and Communication Engineering) and David Juncker (McGill University, Biomedical Engineering) as well as an information/discussion forum to present the new fab management structure.

New MIAM Characterization and Microfabrication Facility

As a result of $7.2 M in Quebec MDEIE and McGill equipment grants, MIAM is proud to present the new MIAM Microfabrication and Characterization Facility.

This facility constitutes a major increase in the resources available at McGill for the development of functional materials and their applications. It includes major tools for the development of both chemical and biological functionalization processes, and the investigation of quantum engineering, the interactions of light with micro and nano structures and the mechanical behavior of multi-functional micro and nano structures.

Equipment available include a Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier Transform IR/Raman Microscope and EPR instruments, a MALDI-ToF-MS (Laser Desorption), a Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance instrument, a Precision Ion polisher, a Skyscan MicroCT, and MX-20 X-ar cabinet, Rotary and Saw Microtomes, Powder and X-Ray Diffraction and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy with Auger Spectroscopy machines.

Equipment are now in varying stages of operation in different parts of the campus. For more information please contact the MIAM administration .

New Training Program Starts this Fall

Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Kirk, NSERC CREATE Integrated Sensor Systems Training Program(ISS) has accepted its first graduate students.

The Integrated Sensor Systems Training Program brings together a multi-disciplinary team from four Quebec Universities: McGill, École Polytechnique, INRS and Sherbrooke, and multiple faculties including Engineering, Medicine, Physics and Chemistry.

Students in the training program will carry out sensor systems related research projects, practice specialized sensor systems techniques, participate in international exchanges and internships and receive valuable professional and business training.
