DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we welcome Dr. Ying Li from the Deptartment o
f Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University for a seminar titled 'T
wo way interactions between clouds and large-scale extratropical atmospher
ic circulation'. Coffee will be served.\n\nAbstract\n\nLarge scale pattern
s of climate variability have been widely examined in the context of dry a
tmospheric dynamics but less so in the context of two-way interactions wit
h clouds. In this talk I will present the emerging evidence for feedbacks
between large scale climate variability and cloud processes at extratropic
al latitudes. Observational analyses reveal that large-scale patterns of c
limate variability have a pronounced signature not only in cloud incidence
but also in cloud radiative forcing. Numerical experiments suggest that c
loud processes\, in turn\, may play a key role in determining the structur
e and amplitude of hemispheric scale dynamic variability. Implications for
trends in the large-scale atmospheric circulation in a warmer climate are
  discussed.\n
