DESCRIPTION: \n\nRamses Galaz\, PhD\, will be giving a guest lecture on how
  a low-cost ventilator was developed in Mexico as a response to the COVID-
 19 pandemic. Having given many conference talks and written various resear
 ch papers on medical device designs\, Ramses Galaz has currently received 
 36 patents on medical devices and 3 regulatory approvals on class II and c
 lass III medical devices.\n\nAbstract of Talk:\n\nDuring the COVID-19 pand
 emic\, there were numerous worldwide efforts to design and develop low-cos
 t ventilators to treat patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome c
 aused by the virus. Many developing countries were not prepared for these 
 events as their health expenditure per capita is very low and they still r
 ely on imported medical devices. In a joint effort in Mexico\, a group of 
 private companies\, hospitals and universities developed a low-cost ventil
 ator that became the first ever Emergency Use Authorization medical device
  approved by the Mexican regulatory agency COFEPRIS. The development of al
 l the engineering and testing was done in under 14 weeks. To this date\, m
 ore than 200 ventilators have been produced and have been distributed in M
 exico and Caribbean countries.\n\nThis talk is open to all McGill students
