McIntyre post-fire update – August 2

News

To all members of the Faculty of Medicine,

Following weeks of remediation efforts we continue to make steady progress on the road to returning the McIntyre Building to normal operations. Roughly half of the building has re-opened, with occupants of the 7th floor and up returning to the building. A great deal of work remains however, in particular with respect to the lower floors. While the goal is to be able to re-open the 1st to 6th floors as quickly as possible, portions of these lower floors are expected to remain closed for several months.

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Faculty of Medicine to extend our gratitude to the countless individuals who have been working non-stop since the July 13 fire.

Please take note of the following updates:

Teaching space:

Following the re-opening of the upper half of the building, our priority is now to re-open the amphitheatres in time for the fall semester. Progress has been made in identifying alternative small-group teaching spaces, in the event that this is not possible – a dedicated working group is developing contingency plans in collaboration with affected parties. We will communicate these plans in the coming weeks as they evolve.

1st floor laboratories:

The three labs located on the 1st floor will be temporarily relocated. We are working directly with members of the labs involved and the move has already begun.

Cleaning of HVAC system 10:

The cleaning of HVAC system 10, which services the upper floors, began yesterday.  This cleaning process is expected to take approximately two weeks and will involve 2 to 3 day disruptions to rooms impacted by the cleaning. For more details including the planned schedule for the cleaning, please refer to the e-mail sent to building occupants yesterday. Note that only the rooms serviced by HVAC system 10, as indicated in the aforementioned e-mail, are affected by this disruptionAll corridors and elevator lobbies will remain accessible at all times.

Future updates:

Updates in the near-term future, consisting primarily of logistical information, will be sent only to the building occupants affected by ongoing remediation activities.  We will continue to keep you informed as information and planning evolve regarding the teaching space.

Questions:

As usual, if you have further questions, please feel free to email buildingdirector.med [at] mcgill.ca or consult our online FAQs.

Thank you once again for your ongoing collaboration and understanding.
