Workshop: "Research Uncertainty? Mining the literature for answers"

Research Uncertainty? Mining the Literature for Answers” workshop

Monday July 20th, 1-3pm

Want to take advantage of the published literature out there to advance your research?

Please join Dr. Nancy Mayo, James McGill Professor, Department of Medicine and Dr. Andrea Benedetti, Associate Professor, Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health and the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation, Research Institute MUHC on Monday July 20th from 1-3pm for the “Research Uncertainty? Mining the Literature for Answers” workshop.

This workshop is open to students and faculty and will provide participants with practical guidance on how to mine the existing literature to answer questions about research areas where there are uncertainties (e.g. about definitions, methods, measures, processes, and/or outcomes), answers that will advance your area of research, and add value to literature reviews required for graduate theses.

This workshop is intended to compliment the information available from McGill Library Services on how to conduct reviews. One such example is found at the following link:

This workshop will allow you to be better prepared to benefit from these online resources and also prepare you to optimally quantify the data arising.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Pose a researchable question;
  2. Chose the best method of synthesizing the literature;
  3. Identify the key elements that need to be extracted;
  4. Chose the best method of quantitatively summarizing the data;
  5. Become familiar with the processes to register their review.

The workshop will be structured to have a mix of expert guidance, group brainstorming, peer input, and one-on-one coaching. For participants who intend to pursue their review, the group leaders can facilitate connections to other researchers to provide further guidance on the processes with the objective that a publication will emerge at the end of the process. To maximize on the time allocated for the workshop, we have pre-prepared a list of definitions and resources so participants can familiarize themselves with the different types of reviews and different types of quantitative methods.

Please review the Definitions of reviews before attending this workshop.
