Terms of Reference

Mandate

The Dean’s Operations Committee represents the Dean’s executive leadership team. Its main role is to oversee the operations of the Faculty. In addition, it serves an advisory role to the Dean in regard to strategic and operational issues, particularly for those issues requiring prompt action and resolution.
 

Roles and Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities of the Dean’s Operations Committee include the following:

  1. Have oversight and ultimate responsibility for operational decisions
  2. To advise the Dean to help guide development of the Faculty’s strategic direction and areas of priority
  3. To provide an executive forum to address a wide variety of strategic and operational topics tabled by the Dean and/or other members of the Executive, including the following:
    a) strategic vision and priorities
    b) new initiatives
    c) opportunities/issues related to the educational mission
    d) opportunities/issues related to the research mission
    e) policies and procedures
    f) governmental issues
    g) affiliated health care institution-related matters
    h) human and financial resources and infrastructure
    i) academic affairs, recruitment
    j) university relations
    k) communication priorities/urgencies
     
  4. To identify, review and prepare matters that must be brought forward to the Deanery Executive Committee for discussion and approval
  5. To review and advise the Dean on issues of concern or risk which may impact on the Faculty or the University
  6. To serve as the Faculty’s Emergency Operations Committee (EOC) in the event of a crisis/emergency/major issue
  7. To receive and review proposals from various sectors of the Faculty and determine appropriate next steps
     

Committee Structure

The Committee is chaired by the Vice-President Health Affairs and Dean of Medicine and Health Sciences.

  3. Vice-Dean, Research
  4. Vice Dean, Academic Affairs
  5. Vice Dean, Education
  6. Executive Director, Administration and Operations
  7. Director, Communications Office
  8. Senior Advisor to the VP/Dean (Secretary)
     

Frequency and Format of Meetings

The Dean’s Operations Committee meets on a weekly basis for one and a half (1.5) hours, all year round.
 

Quorum

Quorum (50% +1) is required for major decisions for items such as the budget. Otherwise, no formal quorum is established for the Dean’s Operations Committee. It shall meet as long as the Dean and at least one (1) other member with important topics to discuss, are available.
