Med-P Objectives

A- Academic objectives: Montreal and Outaouais

Students in the Med-P year are admitted by Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, but are officially registered in the Faculty of Science for the duration of the Med-P Qualifying Year. Students must meet the following academic and professionalism objectives in order to be admitted into the MDCM (undergraduate medical education) program.

The primary educational objective of the Med-P Qualifying Year is to offer students the opportunity to adapt to university-level academics before undertaking the rigorous curriculum of undergraduate medical education. To achieve this objective, students must complete two consecutive semesters of a Bachelor of Science-style curriculum; all students are required to complete required courses and electives.

Criteria for successful completion of the Med-P Qualifying Year

As a Med-P student, your objectives as follows:

  • Minimum of 30 credits over two semesters (Fall, Winter), where at least 27 of those credits are graded;
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.50 (on 4.00);
  • Minimum grade of 'B' in each of the six required courses of BIOL 200 (Molecular Biology), BIOL 201 (Cell Biology & Metabolism), BIOL 202 (Genetics), PHGY 209 (Mammalian Physiology 1), PHGY 210 (Mammalian Physiology 2), MAT 203 (Principles of Statistics) or any equivalent introductory statistics course.
  • Good standing, academically and otherwise.

Students who fulfill all of the criteria shall be considered to have successfully completed the requirements for admission to the MDCM program for the subsequent year.

Students who fulfill all of the criteria BUT have ONE course grade below ''B'' (in a required or complementary science course) shall have their candidacies assessed by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Admission into year 1 of the MDCM program for the subsequent year;
  • Granting a one-year extension of Med-P, within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second Med-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students for potential admission into year 1 of the MDCM program.

Students whose CGPA is between 3.35 and 3.49 and who have no mark below "B" shall have their candidacies assessed by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Admission into year 1 of the MDCM program for the subsequent year;
  • Granting a one-year extension of Med-P, within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second Med-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students for potential admission into year 1 of the MDCM program.
  • Candidacy for admission into the MDCM program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue in their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA between 3.35 and 3.49 with at least one course with a mark below ''B'' shall have their candidacies assessed by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Granting a one-year extension of Med-P, within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second Med-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students for potential admission into year 1 of the MDCM program
  • Candidacy for admission into the MDCM program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA between 3.20 and 3.34 AND with all credits passed without condition (i.e. minimum grade of C or S) shall have their candidacies assessed by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. Possible outcomes of this review include, but are not limited to:

  • Granting a one-year extension of Med-P Qualifying Year, within the Faculty of Science, during which students must demonstrate academic improvement and consistency, and may be required to take certain courses. At the end of this second Med-P year, the candidacy shall be assessed again by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students for potential admission into year 1 of the MDCM program
  • Candidacy for admission into the MDCM program is not retained, in which case the student may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students with a CGPA of 3.19 and below shall not be eligible for admission to the MDCM program in the subsequent year and shall not be eligible for an extension of Med-P Qualifying Year. Such students may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

Students who have not successfully passed all credits shall not be eligible for admission to the MDCM program in the subsequent year and shall not be eligible for an extension of Med-P Qualifying Year. Such students may be eligible to continue their degree program within the Faculty of Science.

B- Professionalism objectives: Montreal and Outaouais

All Med-P students are expected to meet the standards of behavior and professionalism set out in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Code of Conduct as well as the terms of the University’s Handbook on Student Rights and Responsibilities.

In all cases and irrespective of academic standing, students who are reported to have demonstrated behavior not in compliance with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Code of Conduct, the student’s file will be subject to review by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. Possible outcomes of the review include, but are not limited to:

  • Admitting the student into year 1 of the MDCM program with or without probationary measures;
  • Granting a one-year extension of Med-P with or without probationary measures;
  • Requiring the student to withdraw from Med-P, in which case the student may be eligible to continue a degree program within the Faculty of Science.
  • Should the student in question be promoted into the MDCM program, any actions or behavior during the Med-P year(s) deemed not in compliance with the Code of Conduct shall appear on the medical student performance record.

C- Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students: Montreal and Outaouais

Students who do not meet any of the Qualifying Year Med-P criteria for any reason not contemplated by this policy shall be assessed by the Admissions Sub-Committee on the Promotion of Qualifying Year Students where possible outcomes include (but are not limited to) any of those mentioned in the Academic objectives and Professionalism objectives.

Where a student’s file is considered by the Med-P Review Committee, students shall be notified in writing and invited to provide the Committee with a letter of explanation and any relevant and official supporting documents.

Regulations-Med-P Qualifying Year (Outaouais)

The objectives and curriculum of the Med-P Qualifying Year are the same for students in Montreal and in Outaouais, with the following distinctions:

  1. Objectives: If a Med-P student in Outaouais does not fulfill the academic requirements (minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.50 (on 4.00) and no grade below a B in the obligatory courses), the committee can authorize a 2nd year of Med-P, or decide not to grant the extension.
  2. Students in Med-P Qualifying Year (Outaouais) who have not been promoted to the MDCM program remain admissible to pursue a B.Sc. program within the Faculty of Science at McGill, at its discretion. However, this program is only offered in Montreal, in English. 
  3. The 2nd year will not necessarily be in the same format as Med-P in Montreal, as only the required courses of the 1st year of Med-P are offered by McGill in Gatineau in French. The committee, to maintain equity, can take into consideration the unique circumstances of each student for the composition of the 2nd year (for example, obligatory science courses in French outside of McGill), or can recommend a year of study at the Faculty of Science at McGill in Montreal (required courses in English; some electives are offered in French). It is important to take note that the student will not be transferred on a permanent basis to the Montreal Campus, and after the successful completion of the Med-P Qualifying Year the student will be promoted to the MDCM program at Campus Outaouais.


ACADEMIC REGULATIONS – MED-P (OUTAOUAIS)

  1. Consult the Med-P Qualifying Year Outaouais objectives : at least a B in the obligatory courses, and a GPA (combined average of all course grades) of 3.5 out of 4.0 (between B+ and A-). As stated, in the event a student average is below the objectives, the Med-P Sub-Committee on Promotion of Qualifying Year Students can take into consideration the extenuating circumstances, with the aim to accompany and support the student to prepare their integration to the MDCM program.
  2. The academic requirements of the University that provides the courses apply. For example, the grade scales, the delays to withdraw from a course, the appeal process, or the policy on Academic Integrity.
  3. For promotion, please refer to the grade conversion table .pdf below. The GPA (combined average of all course grades) is calculated by the Office of Admissions of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of McGill University that supports the work of the Sub-Committee on Promotion of Qualifying Year Students. The credit system for both Universities is the same (3 cr=3 cr). The grading scales are similar; convert the grade of each course to calculate the average, the only difference is that ''A+''(4,3) at UQO is converted to a ''A'' (4.0) on the McGill grade scale.

The grades converted to percentages that professors use for assignments are not taken into account. Only the official final letter grades are used, as per the Quebec standard for University level courses for the calculation of the average.
