The Faculty of Medicine at McGill University serves the communities in which it is embedded (Montreal, its RUIS, the province, and beyond), and wider society through its activities in research, education, and community engagement. We train health professionals in medicine, nursing, communication sciences and disorders, and physical and occupational therapy. We train scientists across the continuum of degree programs in the health sciences—from undergraduate and graduate degree programs to postdoctoral studies. We undertake all of these activities within an ethos of the highest quality research, education, and clinical care within our facilities, hospitals and non-hospital clinical environments.
Demonstrating responsiveness and accountability to the communities we serve in the three missions of education, research, and clinical care is central to our social accountability mission. The Social Accountability and Community Engagement Office's responsibilities are to provide support to programs, departments and schools within the Faculty in achieving greater social accountability.
Specifically, within the missions of education, research and clinical care, the SACE office's mandates include advancing:
- equity and diversity programs across the continuum, from student recruitment, to academic and non-academic Faculty members. We seek to build a Faculty that is inclusive and welcoming of diversity, and which appreciates diverse forms of excellence within its members. In terms of equity, we seek to understand barriers to meaningful participation in processes of merit-based systems of progress and promotion for persons from historically identified marginalized groups.
- learning in programs in which the curricula express best practices in diversity and equity education in all of our educational programs.
- community engagement in the design and delivery of our educational programs and in identifying priorities in our research mission.
- environmental stewardship through responsible and sustainable practices within the Faculty.
Our vision is for a diverse Faculty, which works in partnership with the communities it serves, to enact excellence in all of its activities.
