DESCRIPTION:Title: Probabilistic structures emerging from dormancy.\n\nAbst
 ract: Throughout the tree of life\, populations have evolved the capacity 
 to contend with sub-optimal conditions by engaging in dormancy\, whereby i
 ndividuals enter a reversible state of vanishing metabolic activity. The r
 esulting 'seed banks' serve as long-lived reservoirs of genetic and phenot
 ypic diversity. Of particular relevance is the case of microbial dormancy\
 , which has a fundamental impact on the evolutionary\, ecological and also
  pathogenic character of microbial communities.\n	\n	However\, despite its u
 biquity in nature\, dormancy is a rather new subject for stochastic indivi
 dual based modeling and interacting particle systems. Here\, it can introd
 uce memory\, resilience and diversity into the underlying systems. The res
 ulting probabilistic structures are surprisingly rich\, already when consi
 dering simple `toy models'\, and lead to new universal scaling limits.\n	\n
 	In this talk\, I briefly review some of the biological background for dorm
 ancy\, highlight some recent mathematical models and results\,\n	and sketch
  lines for future research.\n
