DESCRIPTION:Analytic torsion of locally symmetric spaces and the growth of 
 torsion in the cohomology of arithmetic groups.\n\nAnalytic torsion is a s
 pectral invariant of a Riemannian manifold defined in terms of regularized
  determinants of Laplace operators on forms twisted by a flat bundle. For 
 locally symmetric spaces\, it can be used to study the growth of the torsi
 on subgroup of the cohomology of arithmetic groups for towers of congruenc
 e subgroups or special sequences of local systems of growing rank. I will 
 review some of the recent results and discuss some open problems.\n
