 bout L-functions to give you an idea of what number theorists work with. T
 his semester\, I will present a subject which is also central in number an
 d has numerous applications (not only to number theory!): modular forms. T
 o illustrate the theory\, textbook authors often use modular forms find id
 entities involving the sum-of-divisors functions\, but this is soooo borin
 g! Instead\, I will present a powerful\, beautiful and (relatively) modern
  proof of Lagrange's four square theorem\, which answers the following sim
 ple question: which integers are a sum of four squares? Can you guess the 
 answer? \n\n \n\nSee you all there!\n\n \n\nAll graduate students are invi
 ted. As with all talks in the graduate student seminar\, this talk will be
  accessible to all graduate students in math and stats. This seminar was m
 ade possible by funding from the McGill mathematics and statistics departm
 ent\, PGSS\, and GSAMS.\n
