This message is sent on behalf of Prof. George Demopoulos, Chair of the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering

Dear All:

It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Karim Zaghib as Professor of Practice in our Department for two years. Professor Zaghib has been Adjunct Professor with our Department for over 5 years and now we welcome him to the new position as part of the Québec Government’s strategy of promoting the R&D agenda and industrial activity in the fast growing area of battery-powered electric transportation. Dr. Zaghib, who till recently spearheaded Hydro-Quebec’s R&D program in this area that culminated in the establishment of the world class “Centre of Excellence in Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage (CETEES)”, has been recently assigned to Investissement Québec as Strategic Advisor* to assist in the realization of the Quebec Government’s strategy to help position Québec as a leader in the battery materials and electric vehicle sector. This development strategy for the Québec lithium sector encompasses R&D activities all the way from mineral extraction up to the production and recycling of batteries-range of activities that our department is very well positioned to contribute.

Dr. Zaghib was instrumental over the past 10 years in supporting us develop lithium battery material research that culminated a couple of years ago to the establishment of the NSERC-Hydro-Québec Industrial Research Chair with Professor Gauvin and which allowed us to create a new position filled with Professor Jinhyuk Lee’s appointment earlier this year. In his capacity now as Professor of Practice, Dr. Zaghib will spend part of his time in our department promoting research opportunities all the way from mining of lithium resources to development of new battery materials, and new fabrication/manufacturing processes. Karim is the recipient of the top Gouvernement du Québec Prix Lionel-Boulet for 2019, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering since 2017, Fellow of the Electrochemical Society and recipient of the Battery Technology Award in 2017, and many more international distinctions. Over the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 he was one of the world’s most impactful researchers according to Clarivate Analytics.

In closing I want to extend a very warm welcome to Karim as academic colleague, Bienvenue Karim!
