The Ernie Black Internship Travel Awards were established in 2011 by Ernest D. Black, BSc (Agr) 1952, MSc 1958, to help one or more undergraduate students from the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who are conducting an internship through the Macdonald Campus Internship Program.

In Uganda, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with Dr. Teichroeb, a primate behavioral ecologist, who is conducting two research projects on different monkey species that are found around Lake Nabugabo. With this internship, not only did I gain a much better awareness of the challenges that conserving tropical biodiversity represents but it also made me confident of the field I am studying in and of the career aspirations I have. I am sincerely thankful for the award I received from you. Your contribution has made an enormous difference in the realization of this project and has greatly alleviated the financial stress that was related to this internship in Africa.

Through your generosity, I was able to travel halfway across the world and experience the richness of Thai culture and learn a lot about research methods. I conducted a study on the “Outcomes of Mercy Centre’s Mercy Farm program in Saphan Sung, Bangkok towards social, food and nutrition security for the students”. This study will contribute to identifying strategies to improve the food security of vulnerable populations in South East Asian nations. I am grateful for this opportunity and thank you for supporting students who wish to travel abroad.

The Travel Assistance Program is designed to offer financial support to Macdonald students pursuing internships. They offer partial support to students who must travel to complete their internships. This program is supported by the Bieler Family Internship Office, and will support students on the basis of financial need.
