DESCRIPTION:PhD Oral Defense of Daihui Zhang\, Department of Bioresource En
gineering\n\nThe production of polymers from petroleum-based chemicals has
caused serious sustainability concerns\, therefore stimulating the develo
pment of bio-based polymers. 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a promising
platform chemical that has been widely utilized in various fields\, such a
s biofuels precursors\, fine chemicals synthesis\, and monomers to polymer
 s. The synthesis of HMF derivative based polymers offers a wide range of p
ossibilities. Therefore\, the main objective of this research was to synth
esize and characterize HMF derivative based linear polymers or networks wi
th tunable structures and properties using the thiol-Michael addition reac
tion. Furthermore\, the potential applications were explored as well.\n\nE
veryone in the McGill community is welcome to attend a PhD oral defense. P
lease join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our PhD candidates.\n
