Dr. Janet Rossant. Plenary Lecturer
“Stem cells, embryos and embryo models”
Janet Rossant, CC, PhD, FRS, FRSC is Senior Scientist and Chief of Research Emeritus at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and President and Scientific Director of the Gairdner Foundation. She is an internationally recognized developmental and stem cell biologist, exploring the biology of the early embryo and its stem cells and their applications to understanding and treating human disease. She has also been actively involved in ethics and public policy discussions around stem cell research and genetic modifications. She led the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children from 2005 to 2015. She has received many honors and recognition for her work, including six honorary degrees, and election to the Royal Societies of London and Canada and the US National Academy of Sciences. In 2018 she received the N. American L’Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science Award and in 2021 the ISSCR Achievement Award.
Dr. Barry Zirkin, Clermont Lecturer
“Reduced Testosterone by Aging Leydig Cells: Mechanisms, Prevention and Treatment”
Barry Zirkin, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The research in the Zirkin lab has centered on three main areas: Leydig cell aging, Leydig cell development from stem cells, and spermatogenesis regulation. To date, Dr. Zirkin’s lab has published about 275 scientific papers. For 25 years, he was Head of the Division of Reproductive Biology at Johns Hopkins. He is the recipient of teaching and mentorship awards from the Johns Hopkins School of Arts and Sciences and School of Public Health. He was President of the American Society of Andrology, and prior to that received its Distinguished Service and Distinguished Andrologist awards. He was the recipient of a MERIT Award from National Institute on Aging of the NIH. He is an elected AAAS Fellow.
