From Saturday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 7, the Downtown and Macdonald Campuses will be open only to McGill students, employees and essential visitors. Many classes will be held online. Remote work required where possible. See Campus Public Safety website for details.

The McGill University Archives offer service from the Rare Books and Special Collections Reading Room, McLennan Library Building, 4th floor. The Reading Room contains a range of resources, including published sources on the history of Montreal and McGill University, McGill University calendars and McGill University publications such as Old McGill and McGill News.

Also available in the Reading Room are the University Archives finding aids for manuscript collections and University records, as well as a series of FAQ information files about the University.

Accessing the Archives

There is no fee for reference service at the McGill University Archives. However, the Archives gratefully accepts donations for the services provided. These donations assist us in the ongoing provision of reference services to clients outside McGill. Donations may be made directly to the McGill University Archives.

Visiting in person

We recommend that you make an appointment prior to your visit. This can be done by emailing our refdesk.archives [at] mcgill.ca.

Our online searchable databases provide a range of possible starting points for your research. Once you have found information that you would like to view, make a note of the particular files or items, and record all the information that appears with the item, including any number or codes.
