McLennan-Redpath Terrace Pickup Service

McGill students, faculty and staff can take advantage of a Terrace Pickup Service for print books not available electronically or through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS).

Service Overview

Beginning mid-July, McGill students, faculty and staff can take advantage of a Terrace Pickup Service for print books not available electronically or through the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS).

  • Print items housed in the McLennan-Redpath Library Complex, the Nahum Gelber Law Library, the Islamic Studies Library, and the Marvin Duchow Music Library are currently available. Materials from other branches are not available during this phase.
  • McGill users can request up to ten items per week using a form.
  • Requestors will be notified via email when items are ready to be picked up.
  • The contactless terrace pickup service will occur twice a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11AM – 2PM) at one pickup location – the McLennan Library Building (3459 McTavish Street) terrace. In the case of heavy rain or a thunderstorm, the pickup location will be relocated to the McLennan vestibule. Please note masks will be mandatory to retrieve items from inside the building.
  • Books will be held for one week from the original pick-up date.
  • Physical items placed on course reserve, in-library use items, CDs, DVDs and microfilm are not available for pick up.
  • Items currently checked out to other patrons are not available.

Request a book:

  1. Fill out the form.
  2. If an electronic copy of the book is available via the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) or the McGill Collection, you will be provided with a link to the ETAS.
  3. If the book is not in the ETAS or available electronically, a Library staff member will check the shelf for your requested book(s).
  4. A final e-mail confirming the availability of your requested items and providing instructions for where and when to pick up your item(s) will be sent to the requestor.

Requests

Pickup Area Access

How fast is this service?

Processing a request may take up to 5 business days. If the service is very popular, it may take longer to process requests. Please consider prioritizing requests.

Can I request books from other branch libraries through the terrace pickup service?

At this time, only books housed in the McLennan-Redpath Complex, the Nahum Gelber Law Library, the Islamic Studies Library, and the Marvin Duchow Music Library will be available through this service. Starting with a limited service will allow us to assess its safety and effectiveness, and make any needed adjustments before rolling it out more broadly.

Can I request books on course reserve or CDs, DVDs?

Terrace pickup is not available at this time for course reserves, CDs or DVDs.

What happens if multiple individuals request the same item?

All requests are triaged on a first-come, first-serve basis. Staff will review the time-stamp on the request forms if multiple users request the same item on the same day. If there are not sufficient copies of an item, users will be notified that their request cannot be processed at that time.

I am a new student, how can I obtain my McGill ID card so I can request library materials for pickup?

Prior to placing a request through the Terrace Pickup Service, please request and pickup your McGill ID card from Service Point. More information about this process is available from Student Records: https://www.mcgill.ca/student-records/personal-information/id

What if I need to use the washroom when I arrive at the library?

The McLennan-Redpath Complex, including the washrooms, are closed until further notice.

I am a person with reduced mobility and cannot access the stairs leading up to the McLennan entrance. What do I do?

Reduced mobility users can access the McLennan terrace entrance by heading north on McTavish Street and turning right at the McTavish Gates. Pass Redpath Hall and make another right to the McLennan-Redpath Terrace. As you make your way down the terrace you will face the McLennan terrace and tent.

How will physical distancing be maintained?

Library users who have received confirmation to pick up materials will line-up in front of the tent. Everyone will be required to maintain 2 metres of physical distance from one another.
