Yet\, these documents significantly shape the legal position of internet users. This p osition is often suboptimal not because consumers (or their organizations) do not enjoy enough rights (or competences)\; rather\, their factual capa bilities to oversee and execute these rights are limited.\n\nThe underlyin g premise of the CLAUDETTE Project is that artificial intelligence\, espec ially machine learning\, can be employed to empower consumers and civil so ciety in dealing with dozens of online contracts and legal notices. The le cture will demonstrate how this empowerment could look like\, building on theoretical and empirical arguments. The lecture will further talk about t echnical preconditions for developing similar systems\, promising areas of future research\, and the possible ways of bringing functioning AI-powere d legal tools into the hands of consumers.\n\nCLAUDETTE – “automated CLAUs e DETectEr” – is an interdisciplinary research project hosted at the Law D epartment of the European University Institute\, led by professors Giovann i Sartor and Hans-W. Micklitz\, in cooperation with engineers from Univers ity of Bologna and University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.\n\nAbout the sp eaker\n\nPrzemysław Pałka\, Ph.D.\, is a Research Scholar at Yale Law Scho ol\, Fellow in Private Law at the YLS Center for Private Law\, and a Resid ent Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project\, where he studies the intersections of law\, society\, and new technologies. Interested mainly i n private law\, data law\, and data analytics\, Przemysław tries to theori ze the dialectical relationship between the ways the law co-creates the so cio-technological reality we live in\, and how technological changes chall enge the assumptions the law holds about this world. Policy-wise\, he is i nterested in the regulation of data management\, and the possibilities of using machine to increase access to justice for individuals.\n\nAI and the Law Series\n\nThe AI and the Law Series is brought to you by the Montreal Cyberjustice Laboratory\; the McGill Student Collective on Technology and Law\; the Private Justice and the Rule of Law Research Group\; the McGill Centre for Intellectual Property Policy\; and the Autonomy Through Cyberj ustice Technologies Project.\n\nThis event is eligible for inclusion as 1. 5 hours of continuing legal education as reported by members of the Barrea u du Québec.\n DTSTART:20200205T180000Z DTEND:20200205T193000Z LOCATION:Room 102 (Meighan Classroom)\, Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Mon treal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY:CLAUDETTE: Empowering Consumers through Artificial Intelligence URL:https://www.mcgill.ca/law/channels/event/claudette-empowering-consumers -through-artificial-intelligence-309944 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
