 his lecture will address the reliance that the common law\, and equity in 
 particular\, place on the idea of property\, and in particular what is ach
 ieved by that reliance.\n\nOf course\, the practical power of the trust an
 d all that it enables in both commercial and domestic settings is well kno
 wn. But I want also to move beyond that feature and address the notion tha
 t reliance on the idea of property enables difficult policy choices to be 
 injected into judicial decisions in an astonishingly subliminal way. Prope
 rty law has the reputation for being politically neutral and doctrinally r
 igorous\, with any practical conclusions following from the very nature of
  things rather than requiring any normative assessment. That view appears 
 flawed. This is an idea I have addressed periodically\, but it seems apt t
 o revisit it in the context of this series of lectures.\n\nLes Ateliers de
  droit civil\n\nEn vue de promouvoir la réflexion fondamentale en droit pr
 ivé\, le Centre a instauré la série des « Ateliers de droit civil » qui pe
 rmet de regrouper des juristes québécois et étrangers autour de thèmes de 
 recherche communs. Dédiés à l’étude d’un thème de recherche transversal\, 
 les « Ateliers de droit civil » contribuent ainsi à enrichir et à stimuler
  la recherche fondamentale en droit privé.\n\nLe cycle 2018-2020 se déroul
 era sous le thème « Les influences en droit privé ».\n\nLe cycle d'Atelier
 s de droit civil compte sur l'appui financier du Fonds d’appui à l’accès à
  la justice dans les deux langues officielles du Ministère de la Justice d
 u Canada.\n\nAucune inscription préalable n'est requise.\n\nChaque atelier
  est accrédité pour 1\,5 heure de formation continue obligatoire auprès du
  Barreau du Québec et de la Chambre des notaires du Québec.\n
