Dr. Cassandra Steer is the 2016-2017 Junior Wainwright Fellow at McGill's Faculty of Law, and a Visiting Fellow with the Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism. Her current research interests are comparative property theories applied to outer space, and military uses of outer space.
She is the former Executive Director of the McGill Institute of Air and Space Law. From 2006 – 2014 Cassandra was a Junior Professor at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, teaching criminal law, international criminal law, public international law, and legal research methods. In 2015 Cassandra won the Excellence in Teaching Award from the McGill Political Science Students Association for her comparative politics class.
Cassandra interned at the International Criminal Court under Judge Navi Pillay in 2004, and has been a Visiting Researcher at universities in Argentina, Canada, Germany and the USA, where she was also a Fulbright Scholar.
Currently, Cassandra Steer is the Executive Director of Women in International Security (WIIS) Canada, the member for Canada on the International Law Association Space Law Committee, an Associate Expert contributing to the Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Activities in Outer Space (MILAMOS), and a member of the International Institute of Space Law, Women in Aerospace, the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies, the NATO Association of Canada, and the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War.
