DESCRIPTION:Location: Thomson House Ballroom\n\nRSVP required: https://form
s.office.com/r/VrU9rziTdh\n\nThe lecture examines the concept of ṣuḥba thr
ough focusing on the shared passion for acquiring and disseminating Arabo-
Islamic knowledge that connected Muslims and Jews in the first half of the
twentieth century. Their common interest in preserving\, reproducing\, an
 d classifying Arabo-Islamic sources\, ranging from books to manuscripts\,
led Abraham Shalom Yahuda\, Muḥammad Amīn al-Khanjī and Samī al-Khānjī int
 o a decades-long interconfessional ṣuḥba (collegiality/friendship). It arg
ues that a form of ṣuḥba existed between Yahuda and al-Khānjīs that facili
tated the movement of Arabic and Islamic knowledge from the East to the We
st motivated not only by mutual economic benefit but also by satisfying in
tellectual and ideological objectives during the nahḍa movement and the co
lonial era. By reframing ṣuḥba in this intellectual context\, this lecture
highlights its role in the complex interplay between cultural exchange an
d the formation of modern nationalist identity.\n\nMostafa Hussein is an a
ssistant professor of Jewish-Muslim Studies in the Judaic Studies Departme
nt at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His scholarship offers fresh
perspectives on Jewish-Muslim intersectionalities\, shedding light on the
complex cultural and historical interconnections between these communitie
 s. Dr. Hussein’s recently published book Hebrew Orientalism: Jewish Engage
ment with Arabo-Islamic Culture in Late Ottoman and British Palestine (Pri
nceton University Press\, 2025) is shortlisted for the 75th National Jewis
h Book Award. Dr. Hussein is also the co-editor (with Brahim El Guabli) of
Remembering Jews in Maghrebi and Middle Eastern Media (Penn State Univers
ity Press\, September 2024).\n\nWith support from the Office of Provost an
d Executive Vice-President. Co-Sponsored by the Institute of Islamic Studi
 es.\n\n \n
