Beware of 3rd party apps that store credentials

Did you know that many smartdevice applications are reliant on third party cloud services?

While many of these services appear to be secure, it is important to note some of the dangers of using them. As an example, in order to integrate your McGill account (mail, calendar, etc.), many online mail clients or account aggregators will store your McGill password on their servers.

New sign-in page for Office 365 portal

As of Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at approximately noon, when you sign into McGill's OneDrive for Business or other Office 365 applications (via https://portal.office.com or https://outlook.com/mcgill.ca) you will notice a new sign-in page, instead of the small pop-up authentication window.

This change is being done now in anticipation of migrating the first batch of student and alumni email mailboxes to the Office 365 platform next week.

Phishing scam: "Subject: Dear mcgill.ca Email User"

A phishing attempt is circulating with the subject line "Subject: Dear mcgill.ca Email User". The message says that we are updating our email database due to upcoming firewall upgrade and that you need to revalidate your email account to avoid it being deleted. A phishing attempt is circulating with the subject line "Subject: Your Account will be Temporary Suspended". The message says that your mailbox is running out of data storage and will be suspended, and asks you to log on to a fraudulent website to upgrade / add more data space. Resolved - Login issues with Banner (INB)

Update - 11:55am

The issue has been resolved. If you experienced the issue, you will need to close and then reopen your browser.


Some users cannot log in to Banner (INB). When attempting to do so, they get an "Ora-12154 TNS Error" error message that asks them to close down their Java Client and try again.

We've looked at clouds from both sides now

No one can deny that cloud services offer the most affordable solution for file storage. Never before has our consumption of video and audio been higher and we seem to have an insatiable need for more space. The packrats among us are no doubt thrilled about the virtually limitless and often free space provided by the cloud -- it's like having a spare room in a magic dimension that lets you keep a much as you like without seeing the mess.

Email delivery delays to Videotron and other email service providers

Periodically, there is a delay in delivering mail from McGill to Videotron, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, and Sympatico email addresses. This mainly occurs when sending a large number of emails (several hundred and up) at once as part of a McGill mailing list (such as a LISTSERV).

Student email moving to Office 365 online

McGill IT Services will soon begin moving all McGill Exchange mailboxes to the Microsoft Office 365 cloud service, which provides 50 GB of email storage space online.
