Pouneh Shabani-Jadidi

Persian Language and Linguistics


Pouneh Shabani-Jadidi is Senior Faculty Lecturer of Persian Language and Linguistics at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Ottawa (2012) as well as a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Tehran Azad University (2004). She has taught Persian language and linguistics as well as Persian literature and translation at McGill University, the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago, and Tehran Azad University since 1997.

She has published on a variety of topics, including but not limited to translation, morphology, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition. She is the editor of The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Pedagogy of Persian (2020) and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Persian Linguistics (2018). She has published two monographs, namely Processing Compound Verbs in Persian (Leiden and University of Chicago Press, 2014) and Translation Metacognitive Strategies (VDM Verlag, 2009). She has co-translated three books, namely Island of Bewilderment (Jazire-ye Sargardani), by Simin Daneshvar (Syracuse University Press, 2022), Hafez in Love (Hafez-e Nashenide-Pand), by Iraj Pezeshkzad (Syracuse University Press, 2021) and The Thousand Families: Commentary on Leading Political Figures of Nineteenth Century Iran, by Ali Shabani (Peter Lang, 2018). She has co-authored two proficiency-based textbooks for Persian, namely The Routledge Introductory Persian Course (Routledge, 1st edition 2010 and 2nd edition 2020) and The Routledge Intermediate Persian Course (Routledge, 2012). In addition, she published What the Persian Media Says (Routledge, 2015) and The Routledge Advanced Persian Course (Routledge, 2020).

Other than teaching and research, she serves as reviewer for International Journal of Iranian Studies, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, Sage Open Journal, Frontiers in Psychology, International Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, and LINGUA. In addition, she served as President of the American Association of Teachers of Persian (2018-2020).

Dr. Shabani-Jadidi co-supervised a Ph.D. dissertation (with Prof. Maarten Lemmens) on the morphology and semantics of Persian complex predicates, entitled, “Farsi light verb constructions in location and motion events” (Catherine Nuri, the Department of Linguistics, University Charles De Gaulle - Lille III, France, 2015-2019), and served as the external defense committee member of three Ph.D. dissertations (supervised by Prof. Lydia White) on second language acquisition, one entitled, “Overt pronoun constraint effects in second language Japanese” (Tokiko Okuma, the Linguistics Department, McGill University, 2015), and the other entitled “Second language acquisition of the semantics of focus-sensitive presupposition triggers in English and Persian” (Marzieh Mortazavinia, the Linguistics Department, McGill University, 2018), and the third one entitled, “Plurality in second language Chinese” (Jiajia Su, the Linguistics Department, McGill University, 2019).

    My current research project is co-editing The Routledge Handbook of Persian Literary Translation (with Michelle Quay and Patricia J. Higgins), forthcoming in 2022. I am also involved in the translation of Sohrab Sepehri’s complete collection of poetry, Hasht Ketab (with Prashant Keshavmurthy).
