Message from Acting Director Manuel Balán
Welcome to the Institute for the Study of International Development at McGill University! Our institute is a vibrant and dynamic part of the University, which offers exciting opportunities for inter-disciplinary undergraduate and graduate education. Our Faculty include joint appointments, associate members, and professors of practice, all of whom are dynamic teachers and internationally-known scholars and practitioners in fields related to International Development. We are also fortunate to have a prestigious International Advisory Board that provides timely advice on priorities, strategic alliances, and emerging issues.
This academic year (2020-2021) I have the honor to serve as Acting Director of the Institute. Given the COVID-19 Pandemic, our courses will be remotely delivered in the Fall of 2020. Rather than seeing it as a problem, we are taking this opportunity to promote innovation in the classroom. Our instructors have worked hard to put together courses that offer exciting new possibilities, such as increased interaction with scholars and practitioners in the global south. Moreover, our speaker series and other events will continue to showcase cutting edge research by some of the most important scholars and practitioners in the field. And there will continue to be opportunities to work with faculty members on your own research projects or on the research projects of professors as a research assistant. All this will be available to our undergraduate and graduate students wherever they happen to be. They say constraints breed creativity, and this is the spirit with which we are facing this academic year. We are hoping you will join us for what promises to be an exciting ride!
