For steps on how to apply for readmission via Minerva, please visit McGill's Student Information website. Please ensure you read everything below to know what applies to your specific case, including deadlines, required supporting documentation, and other important information.

Readmission

Former McGill students who wish to return to the University after an absence of one term or more may apply for readmission to either the B.A. Education, B.Ed. or B.Sc. Kinesiology degree (provided they have not completed another degree in the interim).

  • *All supporting documentation (e.g. transcripts) must be received by the Internships & Student Affairs Office no later than the application deadline.

Requirements

Students who apply to be readmitted are subject to the program and degree requirements in effect at the time of readmission, including the regulations on timeline for degree completion. For a current overview of program requirements, please visit the University Calendar here.

All applicants are required to submit a personal statement in the “Comments” section of their Minerva application, summarizing their activities during their absence from McGill and the Faculty of Education.

Students who studied elsewhere during the interim must indicate this in their Minerva application and must also arrange for one copy of their official transcript to be mailed to the Education, Internships & Student Affairs Office at 3700 McTavish Street, Room 243, Montreal, QC, H3A 1Y2, Attention: Internship and Student Affairs Administrator. All transcripts must be received by July 1st for Fall readmission and November 15th for Winter readmission.

If you are returning from an officially approved Leave of Absence (this is indicated on your transcript in Minerva), you do not need to apply for readmission; for questions about your leave of absence, please e-mail isa.education [at] mcgill.ca

If you are returning after an absence due to medical reasons, you will have to have your healthcare provider complete the  Healthcare/Mental Healthcare Provider Approval Form. This must be submitted to isa.education [at] mcgill.ca or in person to Room 243.

Students will be required to re-do courses that were taken more than 5 years ago which have since undergone substantial content changes; similarly, any pedagogical courses specific to Quebec curriculum.

Decisions are made by the Internships & Student Affairs Office throughout July and August; students will be notified at their McGill e-mail address when their application status changes.

Students who are applying for readmission and  intra-faculty must fulfill the requirements for transfer as outlined on this link https://www.mcgill.ca/isa/student/current/transfer

For information on general university policies related to readmission, please visit McGill’s University Calendar here.

Readmission Following Unsatisfactory Standing – Appeal to Continue

Students who fall into Unsatisfactory Standing due to academic performance may submit an appeal to continue at the end of the term; however, their request will only be considered when proof of extenuating circumstances that affected academic performance can be provided (e.g. medical note, etc.).

If you wish to register an appeal to continue, please write to isa.administrator [at] mcgill.ca explaining how the extenuating circumstances would be under control and no longer applicable if readmitted/permitted to continue. In the case of medical problems, students must provide medical documentation confirming that they are able to continue full-time studies (Healthcare/Mental Healthcare Provider Approval Form).

Readmission Following Unsatisfactory Standing – 1st Time

Students seeking readmission after falling into Unsatisfactory Standing for the 1st time must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits (two courses) at another university and receive a minimum grade of ‘B’ on both courses (according that university’s grading system). Courses taken should demonstrate your ability to be successful in your field, and, therefore, should be applicable to your program of study. For McGill courses' equivalencies at other institutions please consult the online Course Equivalency tool.

Readmission Following Unsatisfactory Standing – 2nd Time or more

Students seeking readmission after falling into Unsatisfactory Standing for the 2nd time (or more) must successfully complete a minimum of 18 credits (six courses) at another university and receive a minimum grade of ‘B’ on all courses (according to that university’s grading system). Courses taken should demonstrate your ability to be successful in your field, and, therefore, should be applicable to your program of study. Applicants seeking readmission after a second instance of Unsatisfactory Standing will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and a follow up meeting may be required prior to a decision being rendered.

Readmission Following a Failure in Field Experience

Students who fell into Unsatisfactory Standing due to failure in a Field Experience are eligible for readmission one full academic year after leaving the program. Students will be required to make an in-person appeal for readmission to the Education Undergraduate Student Affairs Committee (SAC) by emailing isa.administrator [at] mcgill.ca.

Applicants must compose a one-page personal statement, addressed to the Student Affairs Committee, which speaks to the following questions:

  1. What have you been doing since you left McGill?

  2. What concrete steps have you taken to address the issues that lead to your unsatisfactory Field Experience outcome?

  3. Why are you now better prepared to be successful in a teacher education program?

Applicants must also provide at least one letter of reference, supporting the claims that they make in their personal statement (e.g. from a teacher, Administrator, etc.). Any supporting documentation should be provided to the Internships & Student Affairs Officevanessa.smith2 [at] mcgill.ca ( )no later than April 15 (Fall readmission), or October 31 (Winter readmission).

Simultaneous Readmission and Transfer into Education

If you were in Satisfactory Standing when you left the University (from the Faculty of Education, or from a Faculty other than Education) and your CGPA is at least 3.0 or higher, you are eligible for consideration for simultaneous readmission and Inter or Intra-Faculty transfer.

If you were in Satisfactory Standing when you left the University (from a Faculty other than Education) and you are applying for readmission and an Inter-Faculty transfer, however, your CGPA is less than 3.0, you must return to your original Faculty and raise your CGPA to 3.0. For some programs you may also be permitted to complete at least 2 courses (6 credits) relevant to your intended field of study at another institution with grades of ‘B’ or better. Official transcripts must be submitted to our offices in advance of the application deadline of July 1st (for Fall) or November 15th (for Winter).  To see if this option applies to your intended program, isa.administrator [at] mcgill.ca (email us) to discuss your individual situation.

Students who are applying for readmission and transfer into Education must fulfill the requirements for transfer as outlined, here: https://www.mcgill.ca/isa/student/current/transfer
